An international multidisciplinary research centre of excellence specialising in the generation of high-quality synchrotron and free-electron laser light and its applications in materials and life sciences.  The mission of Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste is to promote cultural, social and economic growth through:  basic and applied research  technology and know-how transfer  advanced technical, scientific and management training  the creation and coordination of national and international scientific networks.  The primary resources of the research centre are two advanced light sources, the electron storage ring Elettra and the free electron laser (FEL) FERMI. Operating continuously (24 hours a day), they provide light of the selected “colour” and quality to over 30 experimental stations allowing the characterisation of the structure and function of matter with sensitivity down to the molecular and atomic levels. These powerful means are used by a large community of researchers from academia and industry to produce nanostructures and devices, and to develop new technological processes.

Image processing software solutions for applications in manufacturing, automation, pharmaceutical robotics and biomedical research.  GVT, which was born as a spin-off of SISSA, the International School for Advanced Studies of Trieste, specialises in advanced solutions in industrial robotics, computational vision and machine learning. 

Virtual prototyping, numerical analysis and production process optimisation.  Experimentation and development of computer technologies through machine learning and artificial intelligence with applications in the automotive and biotech sectors. 

Innovative technologies for both web and mobile, software cybersecurity.  Design and creation of user-friendly interfaces for web and mobile.  Custom Content Management Systems.  Design, implementation and support services for complex information systems.

Design and implementation of processes and systems powered by renewable sources for the combined production of electrical and thermal energy, including hybrid thermo-photovoltaic solar panels connected to heat pumps and integrated with electrochemical accumulators.

Development and commercialisation of technologies for high-speed micro- and nanostructuring of surfaces. Manufacturing micro and nano-structured devices and supports. ThunderNIL developed the Pulsed-NIL™ surface nanostructuring solution, which can be applied to a wide range of industries and gives everyday objects additional functionality and unique aesthetic elements.

Web-based solutions for satellite tracking of vehicle fleets in the field of road transport and goods handling. Cargo and freight interchange platforms aimed at minimising transport asymmetries.

Innovative startup carrying out research and development activities in the biotechnology and molecular biology field. Ulisse Biomed developed an innovative diagnostic kit (Ladymed) which can easily detects the human papillomavirus (HPV), responsible for the onset of cervical cancer, by means of a self-sampling at home. Compared to the most common molecular tests used in national screening, Ladymed is also able to genotypethe virus, i.e. provide precise information on the strain present in the infection.

Training, research and dissemination in the fields of life sciences, psychology and cognitive sciences.  The study of the levels of organisation of molecules, cells, organisms and their interactions with the environment, as well as the study of the mind/brain system.
