Development of simulation models for low-environmental-impact electricity generation systems based on fuel cells. Energy recovery, conversion, and storage systems.

The Institute of Marine Sciences carries out research in Mediterranean, oceanic and polar areas to study:  the evolution of the oceans and continental margins to define the activity of volcanoes, faults and underwater landslides and impact scenarios on the coasts  the influence of climate change on ocean circulation, acidification, bio-geochemical cycles and marine productivity  marine habitats and ecology, the increasing pollution of coastal and deep areas  fishery resources to maintain their exploitation within sustainable limits and improve mariculture and aquaculture practices  the natural and anthropic factors that have an economic and social impact on coasts and lagoons from prehistory to the industrial era. 

The Institute of Polar Sciences aims at:  increasing the quality of Italy’s scientific and technological research in the polar regions  contributing to knowledge on global changes (also in support of Italian and European environmental policies) and to the development of new technologies and survey methodologies. 

Services, research and consulting in the field of natural sciences and engineering, particularly regarding the protection and management of water resources.  R&D for optimising water management and the hydraulic protection of the territory. Environmental and hydraulic design of water and sewage networks real-time smart monitoring; water and pressure loss management; water treatment to remove parasites, one- and multi-dimensional numerical modelling of networks, water bodies and floodable areas; physical scale modelling of the interaction between water courses and structures; hydrogeological and hydrological studies; surveys and GIS. 

R&D activities, advanced consultancy and training in the sector of transport systems engineering, with particular attention to railway circulation, pedestrian mobility, transport planning (public and private), vehicular circulation and mobility management, integrating models and advanced methods of analysis, simulation and optimisation.

Services and technologies for managing, protecting and exploiting the marine environment; setting up of temporary exhibitions and visitor centres; scientific outreach.  Shoreline is a point of reference for WWF Italy concerning marine issues at a national level and is actively involved in the management of WWF coastal protected areas.  The areas of activity concern:  Consulting for marine and coastal protected areas  monitoring activities in protected natural areas in the field of eco-ethology and physical chemistry of marine waters  marine research and aquaculture.

Energy optimisation systems with hybrid solar panels connected to heat pumps and integrated with electrochemical accumulators. Design and implementation of processes and systems powered by renewable sources for the combined production of electrical and thermal energy, including hybrid thermo-photovoltaic solar panels connected to heat pumps and integrated with electrochemical accumulators.
