Why work at Area Science Park?
In carrying out our initiatives, the care of human resources, their well-being and their work is a fundamental principle of Area Science Park: people, relationships and skills are at the core of our mission, with the aim of adding value to the whole system.
Area Science Park has an active community of over 2,800 people. Half are under 40 years old; three-quarters are university graduates or even have a PhD. More than half are engaged in R&D. Women represent over a third of the total (37%).
Staff of Area Science Park have access to a gym, a counselling desk, an anti-violence counter and can participate in conferences on prevention and well-being. In addition, at the disposal of all the tenants of Area Science Park, there are canteens, coffee bars, ATMs, equipped green spaces, cycling paths and electric vehicle charging stations.
It is not surprising that one of the first guests of Area Science Park are children. Every year the inter-company nursery welcomes them to help the men and women working on our campuses balance their work commitments with their role as parents.

1 PhD scholarship in Molecular Biomedicine
As part of the 42nd cycle of PhD programmes, the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Trieste is funding, through Area Science Park (Quantum Project), one PhD scholarship dedicated to the project “Molecular and immunological strategies for Flavivirus intervention” to be carried out at the Virology Unit of Area Science Park, located in Padriciano (Trieste). This PhD project aims to increase our knowledge on the immunoprofile of flavivirus proteins and develop the next generation of neutralizing antibodies, vaccines, and antiviral peptides against these arboviruses. The research will focus on one or more of the following areas: Immune mapping and discovery: identifying and characterizing high-potency neutralizing monoclonal antibodies to define the “blueprints” of protection. Structural dynamics: investigating how amino acid substitutions trigger “viral breathing,” affecting stability and how the virus hides from or reveals itself to the immune system. Rational design: utilizing Artificial Intelligence and computational modeling to design synthetic antigens and antiviral peptides with enhanced stability and broader cross-reactivity. Biotechnological interventions: Developing innovating delivery systems to express therapeutic molecules, providing a novel avenue for controlling virus transmission at the vector and host level. For more information on requirements, application procedures, and details of the PhD programme, please refer to the official call available in the dedicated section of the University of Trieste website. Research contracts and scholarships1 PhD scholarship dedicated to the project “Representation learning for understanding and improving modern AI-systems”
As part of the 42nd cycle of PhD programmes, the University of Trieste is funding, through Area Science Park resources, 1 PhD scholarship dedicated to project “Representation learning for understanding and improving modern AI-systems” (Project No. 9 of the call), to be carried out at the Laboratory of Data Engineering (LADE) of Area Science Park, located in Padriciano (Trieste). The fellowship is linked to two possible research directions: 1. Representation learning for controlling complex systems Supervisor: Alessio Ansuini This project will explore how abstract representations learned by deep neural networks can help translate high-level control goals into feasible low-level interventions, with applications to complex systems such as biological, technological, and computational systems. Info: alessio.ansuini@areasciencepark.it 2. Topological and dynamic methods for neural representations Supervisor: Matteo Biagetti This project will develop scalable methods based on topological data analysis to study high-dimensional representations in artificial and biological neural systems, with applications to interpretability and scientific datasets. Info: matteo.biagetti@areasciencepark.it | Website: https://matteobiagetti.github.io/ For more information on requirements, application procedures, and details of the PhD programme, please refer to the official call available in the dedicated section of the University of Trieste website. Research contracts and scholarships1 PhD scholarship dedicated to the project “AI-augmented FAIR-by-design methodologie”
As part of the 42nd cycle of PhD programmes, the University of Trieste is funding, through Area Science Park resources, 1 PhD scholarship dedicated to the project “AI-augmented FAIR-by-design methodologie” (Project No. 10 of the call) to be carried out at the Laboratory of Data Engineering (LADE) of Area Science Park, located in Padriciano (Trieste). Supervisors: Federica Bazzocchi Co-supervisors: Tommaso Rodani, Mariarita de Luca The project will develop AI-powered FAIR digital ecosystem designed to automate the research data lifecycle through scalable architectures and autonomous pipelines. By integrating LLMs for metadata extraction and machine learning for data quality, the project will translate FAIR principles into machine-actionable processes within the EOSC framework, ensuring seamless interoperability across European research infrastructures. This PhD project shifts the data curation paradigm towards “FAIR-by-design” data ecosystems, integrating Artificial Intelligence directly into the data creation and ingestion phases to overcome the limitations of traditional data management. The candidate will design, set up, and validate highly scalable data architecture where critical data tasks are integrated with generative and predictive models. By utilizing advanced technologies and AI techniques the project aims to translate abstract FAIR principles into concrete, automated, machine-actionable processes. The ultimate goal is to engineer AI-powered FAIR digital ecosystem where data life cycle is managed in all its aspect. The candidate will orient these AI-augmented methodologies within the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) framework, ensuring seamless interoperability across European research infrastructures.
