The ICGEB invites applications for the post of Technician

POST TITLE: Technician

DUTY STATION: Trieste, Italy

DATE REQUIRED: 1st June 2021

TYPE OF CONTRACT: Fixed term appointment

DURATION: Initial period of three months, with possibility of one year further extensions subject to performance

LEVEL: GS-1 50% part-time (UN Salary Scales)

DUTIES: Under the supervision of the Head, Technical Services, the incumbent will perform the following duties:

• routine production of cold chamber storage of solutions media such as: PBS, plates for various types of bacterial culture (with or without antibiotics) sterile water, TB;
• furthermore he/she will have to prepare the services within his competence in the various sectors, in direct collaboration with the laboratory staff, the group leaders and the operational representatives and contribute to satisfying the specific requests based on the various experiments following the required protocols;
• to the scientific group in the laboratories must be experienced in the use of laboratory techniques and instruments necessary to carry out the production of media and solutions and the sterilization of glassware (such as autoclaves, stoves, PH meters, incubators, dishwashers, mixers);
• maintenance of the equipment: calibration, cleaning, sterilization, and conduct periodic tests to verify the perfect efficiency and accuracy of the instrumentation. It also checks the inventory needed to keep the laboratory fully operational, such as disposable tools and materials, chemicals, reagents, etc.;
• correctly manage consumables prepare equipment and materials to conduct the experiments contribute to the planning and organization of work in the laboratory, collaborating with the staff of the laboratories or group leaders to define work procedures and protocols the technician must have the ability to analyze, precision and accuracy and good team working skills, problem solving aptitude and excellent organizational skills;
• provide support to the Glassware and Sterilization Unit;

Any other technical service at the ICGEB Trieste laboratories and premises as may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma. Previous experience and use of laboratory instruments is an advantage.

COMPETENCIES: Manual dexterity and practical ability with instruments necessary to do the job, problem-solving and interpersonal skills and interest in working in an international environment.

LANGUAGES: English essential, Italian is an asset.
