FAIR-BY-DESIGN

Sector:Data science
Typology:National
Programme:Fund for the Promotion and Policy Development of the National Research Programme (NRP)
Project duration:01/01/2022 - 31/12/2025

The basic objective of FAIR-BY-DESIGN project will be to develop innovative solutions for the production and management of FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data. The initiative aligns with the strategic objectives of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) and Horizon Europe, aiming to minimize the burden on researchers in sharing and reusing scientific data. It is expected that techniques will be implemented to generate FAIR data directly during acquisition, thereby reducing the time and energy required to reprocess existing data sets.

The objectives thus include

  • the definition of protocols for FAIR-by-design data,
  • the creation of pipelines for automatic data collection,
  • the training of new professionals in the field of data curation.

EXPECTED RESULTS

The FAIR-BY-DESIGN project aims to achieve significant results in improving the management and use of scientific data, with a positive impact on several levels:

  1. **Optimization of Research Infrastructures**: Through the adoption of FAIR-by-design protocols, significant optimization in data management is expected at the involved infrastructures, such as LAGE and LAME. This will lead to greater operational efficiency and a reduction in costs associated with data reprocessing.
  2. **Increased Data Quality and Reusability**: The generated data will be more easily traceable, accessible, and reusable, promoting a sustainable data lifecycle. This qualitative improvement will encourage further scientific collaborations and enhance the potential for innovation based on pre-existing data.
  3. **Expanded Computing Capacity**: The expansion of the ORFEO computing center will allow for the management of a larger volume of complex data and support advanced simulations, contributing to the advancement of high-profile scientific projects at the national and European levels.
  4. **Training of Specialized Personnel**: The opportunity to train new professionals skilled in data curation through the project will create a highly qualified workforce capable of meeting future challenges in scientific data management. This will contribute to the growth of human capital in the technological and scientific field.
  5. **Impact on PNRR Projects**: By supporting the main PNRR projects, the project will have a positive impact on Italy’s ability to achieve its research and development goals, increasing the competitiveness of the Italian research system in the European and international context.
  6. **Sustainability and Energy Efficiency**: With the adoption of FAIR-by-design data collection techniques, a significant reduction in the energy consumption required for data management is estimated, contributing to long-term environmental sustainability goals.

In summary, the project enhance the capabilities of current research infrastructures of Area Science Park and also create a collaborative and innovative environment to promote scientific and technological progress.

PROJECT PHASES

The project will operate according to the following strategic framework:
