Mosquito-borne diseases emerge from a complex interplay between vectors, pathogens, associated microorganisms and the environment. Understanding how these components interact is becoming increasingly important as mosquito distributions shift, invasive species establish in new areas, and novel biological control strategies are developed. We study how mosquito biology and vector competence are shaped by microbial associations and environmental conditions, and how this knowledge can be translated into improved approaches for disease surveillance and control. Using examples from our work on symbiont-based strategies, invasive mosquitoes and temperature-dependent vector biology, we aim to move beyond single-factor explanations to a more realistic understanding of transmission risk and support the development of more effective, context-aware interventions.
