Federating sciences: CERN in the European Open Science Cloud

13 October 2026
h:
11:00 - 13:00
Location:
Meeting Room, Building C -102, Area Science Park, Padriciano 99, Trieste
Speaker:
Giovanni Guerrieri, CERN, Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire

The EOSC Federation attempts to create a shared space where researchers can access data, resources and repositories without connecting the technical dots themselves.

National and institutional providers, called Nodes, keep their own services, but share one way to authenticate users, describe what they offer, and trust each other’s authorization decisions.

The resulting mesh opens storage, compute and tools across many providers, so a researcher is no longer limited to what their home institution can offer.

CERN is building its own Node, bringing decades of experience running federated computing for high-energy physics to a much wider community.

This talk shows how the EOSC Federation works, lessons learned while building it, and what a researcher gains from it.
