Dr. Alona Sosinsky is Scientific Director for Cancer at Genomics England, where she leads efforts to integrate genomic insights into precision oncology. With over 20 years of experience in bioinformatics and cancer genomics, she has helped to shape the UK’s approach to genomic testing across cancer types and advanced the use of whole genome sequencing in clinical care. Alona specialises in developing and validating bioinformatics solutions, overseeing rigorous quality assurance, and translating genomic data into clinically meaningful outcomes. She is recognised for her strategic, delivery-focused leadership and her ability to foster collaboration across research, clinical, and healthcare communities.

Title: Integrating genomic sequencing into clinical practice for cancer patients

Abstract: The NHS Genomic Medicine Service (GMS) was launched in 2018 to enable equitable access to genomic medicine and comprehensive genomic testing in England using a standardised National Genomic Test Directory (NGTD). Whole Genome Sequencing is now offered as routine care through the GMS for a number of tumour types. I will discuss challenges and successes of providing a “one stop shop” genomic test for cancer patients. I will cover the state-of-the-art machine learning-based methods of sequence analysis as well as new sequencing technologies that have potential of improving patient management and enabling precision oncology.
