The ICGEB invites applications for the post of Safety Manager

POST TITLE:                         Safety Manager

DUTY STATION:                   Trieste, Italy

DATE REQUIRED:                As soon as possible

TYPE OF CONTRACT:         Fixed term appointment

DURATION:                           An initial period of three months, with the possibility of one-year extensions subject to satisfactory performance.

LEVEL:                                   GS-3 (UN Salary Scales)

DUTIES:                                 Under the overall supervision of the Head, Technical Services, and with the understanding that the incumbent will be responsible for the fulfilment of duties related to safety, the staff member will be requested to:

  • ensure all health and safety standards are complied with in respect to the premises, in accordance with relevant Italian safety standards (Relevant Law in force);
  • conduct safety training courses for laboratory and administrative staff, and arrange medical examinations for personnel, as may be required;
  • assist the Medical Officer to ensure that health and safety activities are conducted according to recognized Italian health standards in the working environment;
  • conduct frequent spot inspections, and verify the correct application of rules of good laboratory practice;
  • monitor the use of all radioactive isotopes, chemical reagents and biological agents in the laboratories, and ensure their use according to local government and health inspector standards;
  • deliver, collect and ship radioactivity dosimeters;
  • complete the relevant registers and open files relating to the use of radioisotopes, chemical reagents and biological agents;
  • monitor and control radioisotope, chemical and biological waste products and ensure their decontamination and disposal according to established safety standards;
  • ensure the periodical withdrawal, storage and disposal of the chemical and radiological waste, and be responsible for maintenance of the dedicated rooms; oversee and supervise compliance of safety of the waste disposal area;
  • compile, in due time and when appropriate, documentation for the local government and health authorities related to safety requirements;
  • report all shortcomings and make recommendations to bring facilities to international safety standards;
  • substitute, in case of necessity, the technician in charge of the sterilization of biological waste;
  • participate as requested in safety-related meetings;
  • regularly audit adherence to health, safety and security policies, and escalate non-compliance;
  • keep abreast with the latest safety protocols and take part in internal and external trainings;
  • inspect the ICGEB premises, in coordination with the Head of Technical Services;
  • produce photos and access badges for all new personnel;
  • perform other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or technical/vocational training and 3 years of demonstrative experience in Health and Safety;
  • Proficiency in standard codes of practice and safety;
  • Italian Degree in “Tecniche della Prevenzione nell’Ambiente e nei Luoghi di Lavoro”, “Scienze della sicurezza e protezione” or “Ingegneria della sicurezza e protezione”;
  • Possession at least of one requirement established by Italian Decree number 81/2008, art. 32, paragraphs 2,3,5; Familiarity with the Italian Local Government Offices and Health Authorities and ability to interpret the requirements of those offices, the relevant decrees and laws issued;
  • Knowledge of the European Union safety codes and regulations.

  • Experience with information gathering and report writing;
  • Ability to conduct safety risk assessments;
  • Attention to details and accuracy;
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Interest in working in a multicultural environment;
  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel and Outlook.

LANGUAGES:                       Fluency in English, working knowledge of Italian is an asset.
