POST TITLE:                         Research Associate

DUTY STATION:                   Trieste, Italy

DATE REQUIRED:                1 July 2023

TYPE OF CONTRACT:         Fixed term appointment

DURATION:                           An initial period of three months, with possibility of one-year extensions subject to satisfactory performance.

LEVEL:                                   GS-3 (UN Salary Scales)

DUTIES:                                 Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Group Leader, Biotechnology Development Unit (BDU), the incumbent will take responsibility for research and development activities involved in the different projects managed by the Unit, with special attention to the development of technologies for the production of biosimilars, Quality Control (QC), chemical modifications of recombinant proteins and peptide synthesis. In particular, she/he will:

  • Contribute to the development of technologies for the high-yield production of the biosimilars, with the special attention to the downstream processing and chemical modifications;
  • Contribute to the development and performance of the Quality Control (QC) testing for biosimilars;
  • Perform the peptide synthesis work and organic chemistry work such as different linkers preparation (e.g. Polyethylene glycol (PEG), lipids);
  • Contribute to the operationalization of a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)/GMP-like laboratory for biosimilars;
  • Assist the Group Leader in the research projects supervision and completion. Develop novel cutting-edge techniques and approaches related to the biotechnology related projects and bioprocessing;
  • Perform technology transfer trainings;
  • Optimize laboratory operation through proactive consulting and troubleshooting;
  • Provide scientific staff with advice and guidance on maintaining their equipment and laboratory accessory;
  • Assist the Group Leader in supervision of visiting fellows;
  • Perform other work-related duties as may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS:               High school diploma or equivalent. Advanced University degree or PhD in the biological or chemical sciences is an asset. At least three years of extensive research experience.

COMPETENCIES:                 Previous experience in the field of biologics and year chemical modifications; experience in research and development activities in the production and Quality Control (QC) of therapeutic antibodies and experience with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)/Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) quality systems would be an asset. Good interpersonal skills and motivation to work in team under pressure with and results timeline.

LANGUAGES:                       English essential, Italian is an asset.
