POST TITLE: Research Associate

DUTY STATION: Trieste, Italy

DATE REQUIRED: 1 October 2020

TYPE OF CONTRACT: Fixed-term appointment

DURATION: Initial period of three months with possibility of one year further extensions subject to performance.

LEVEL: GS-3 (UN Salary Scales)

DUTIES: Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Group Leader of Bacteriology, the incumbent will assist the scientists of the laboratory by performing the following duties:

• Laboratory manager roles: scheduling staff; ordering supplies; maintaining security standards; maintenance of laboratory equipment, its replacement, service, and repair;

• Research activities: Cell–cell communication in bacteria; Plant-bacteria signalling; Microbiology of Plant Growth-Promoting bacteria; Bioinoculants for agriculture, their application and experimental design;
• Other roles: involvement in the supervision of all members of the laboratory; Organization of events for science dissemination for different target group;
• Perform other work related duties as may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of secondary (high school) education is essential. University Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biotechnology or related fields is an asset. Minimum three years of laboratory managing experience in an international setting. Good experience in molecular genetic studies of bacteria and in molecular biology studies of bacteria. Good experience in plant—microbe interactions studies and in the handling national and international funding calls/grants and collaborations. Authorship in publications in peer-reviewed international scientific journals in plant-bacteria interaction and bacterial genetics is an asset.

COMPETENCIES: Very good experience in methodologies of microbiology, bacterial genetics and molecular biology. Active attitude towards work and working issues, high commitment and respect of deadlines. Organizational, analytical, manual and interpersonal skills and motivation to work in team in an international environment.

LANGUAGES: English is essential, Italian is an asset
