POST TITLE: Group Leader
DUTY STATION: Trieste, Italy
DATE REQUIRED: 1st September 2022
TYPE OF CONTRACT: Fixed term appointment
DURATION: Initial period of one year, with further extensions of four years subject to satisfactory performance.
LEVEL: P1 (UN Salary Scale)

DUTIES: Under the guidance and supervision of the Director-General and the Scientific Coordinator, the scientist will be responsible for funding and coordinating research activities in the Trieste component. ICGEB will provide a startup equipped laboratory, a staff research assistant, laboratory consumables funds, and access to ICGEB pre-doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships. He/She will be responsible for:

  • Establishing an internationally competitive research laboratory in a topic of the Life Sciences in accordance with the mandate of the institute; ICGEB is focused on solving, through scientific research and training, major challenges faced by our 66 Member Countries, many of whom are in the Global South.
  • Initiating and establishing in-field collaborations and networks with scientists in the ICGEB Member Countries;
  • Developing a vigorous, externally-funded research program;
  • Collaborating with the other ICGEB Group Leaders in the overall scientific organization and in the implementation of the research programmes of the components;
  • Supervising, mentoring and coordinating the activities of the junior staff, fellows and technicians;
  • Taking part in ICGEB’s training and capacity-building activities;
  • Performing other work-related duties, as may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS: PhD in Biology, Chemistry, Biotechnology or related fields. Relevant professional experience at the international level.

COMPETENCIES: The successful candidate will develop a competitive research program on question(s) of molecular biology and/or biotechnology, especially, but not exclusively, related to infectious diseases, antibiotic resistance and systems biology. The research undertaken should be relevant to the ICGEB community and should complement existing research topics and strengths in the three ICGEB components. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of research leadership, a strong publication record, good communication skills, experience in working in a multicultural environment and an ability to attract competitive research funding.

LANGUAGES: Fluent English (written and spoken). Knowledge of Italian is an asset.
