Group Leader, Stem Cell Biology

POST TITLE:                             Group Leader, Stem Cell Biology

DUTY STATION:                       Trieste, Italy

DATE REQUIRED:                   1^st April 2020

TYPE OF CONTRACT:            Fixed term appointment

DURATION:                              Initial period of one year with further extensions of four years, subject to performance.

LEVEL:                                       P1

DUTIES:                                     Under the guidance and supervision of the Director-General, the scientist will be responsible for funding and coordinating research activities within the Group and will be responsible for:

1.     Establishing an active cellular and molecular biology research laboratory in the field of stem cell biology. To support this, ICGEB will provide a start-up equipped laboratory, including a consumables budget, technical support and access to ICGEB pre- and post-doctoral fellowships plus use of common facilities for microscopy, flow cytometry and cell sorting, animal models, high-throughput screening, viral vectors.2.     Carrying out independent cutting-edge basic research programmes in Stem Cell Biology, with special regard to the needs of the ICGEB research community.

3. Developing a vigorous, externally-funded research program.

4.     Collaborating with the other ICGEB Group Leaders in the overall scientific organization and in the implementation of the research programmes of the Component.5.     Collaborating with scientists in ICGEB’s member countries. 6.     Supervising and coordinating the activities of the junior staff, fellows and technicians.7.     Taking part in ICGEB’s training and capacity-building activities.8.     Performing other work-related duties, as may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS: PhD in Biology, Chemistry, Biotechnology or related fields. A minimum 6 years of relevant professional experience at the international level.

COMPETENCIES:     The successful candidate will develop a research program on fundamental questions related to stem cell biology, and/or their applications, in the fields of disease modeling and regenerative medicine. This new position will crucially complement the research strengths of the ICGEB Research Centres. A proven track record of research leadership is desirable, a strong publication record and an ability to attract competitive research funding is required.

LANGUAGES:                           Fluent English (written and spoken). Knowledge of Italian would be an asset.
