Italian study paves the way for personalised therapy based on gender"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Alzheimer\u2019s disease is not the same for men and women:\u00a0<\/strong>certain molecular mechanisms in fact differ between the two sexes, particularly in terms of metabolism of an\u00a0<strong>amino acid\u00a0<\/strong>that has recently been proposed as an\u00a0<strong>early marker of this disease\u00a0<\/strong>and which would therefore not be equally reliable for men and women.<\/p>\n<p>These are the findings of an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/cell-reports\/fulltext\/S2211-1247(22)01091-9?_returnURL=https%3A%2F%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%2Fretrieve%2Fpii%2FS2211124722010919%3Fshowall%3Dtrue\">Italian study published in \u201cCell Reports\u201d\u00a0<\/a>in September and led by the\u00a0<strong>University of Milan<\/strong>, with collaboration of the\u00a0<strong>Insubria University, University of Milano-Bicocca, Rome\u2019s Tor Vergata University<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>Area Science Park Genomics and Epigenomics Laboratory (LAGE)<\/strong>. The research paves the way for distinct and personalised treatment based on gender.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers analysed post-mortem samples from the brains of men and women with normal ageing and from patients of Alzheimer\u2019s disease. Area Science Park\u2019s contribution, explains\u00a0<strong>Danilo Licastro, Head of LAGE<\/strong>, was focused on\u00a0<strong>genomic and epigenomic analysis<\/strong>. The greatest challenge was to define and implement an analysis protocol that was compatible with the RNA tissue samples sent by the University of Tor Vergata and previously provided by biobanks, because this post-mortem tissue did not present the same quality as fresh tissue.<\/p>\n<p>Analysis highlighted marked\u00a0<strong>differences in terms of the metabolic pathways altered<\/strong>. Two examples are insulin response and metabolism of the amino acid serine (which generates an important regulator of cerebral function, D-Serine).
