Francesco Ortu<\/span><\/b>\u00a0was awarded the\u00a0Artificial Intelligence Prize from the University of Trieste<\/b>\u00a0for his thesis \u201cInterpreting How Large Language Models Handle Facts and Counterfactuals through Mechanistic Interpretability\u201d as part of the\u00a0Master’s program in \u201cData Science and Scientific Computing\u201d<\/b>. This work was developed at the Institute for\u00a0Research and Technological Innovation (RIT)<\/b>\u00a0of Area Science Park. The study focuses on how\u00a0generative language models<\/b>, like those behind ChatGPT, react when presented with text containing false information.<\/span><\/p>\n

The work was published in the\u00a0Proceedings of the 62nd Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics<\/a>\u00a0and presented last August in Bangkok at one of the most important conferences on Computational Linguistics and Artificial Intelligence for Natural Language.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cResearch on interpretability,\u201d explains\u00a0Francesco Ortu<\/b>, \u201caims to bridge the gap between empirical approaches and our scientific understanding of the inner workings of generative language models (LLMs). So far, most existing research in this area has focused on how models copy or recall factual knowledge. In our study, we analyzed how information propagates within the neural network, identifying the \u2018neurons\u2019 that choose whether to promote or suppress false information proposed by the user.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
